How Long Will Cialis Last?

How Long Will Cialis Last?It is impossible to give an exact time for how long Cialis lasts.  This is because everyone has a different body system and will process the ED treatment differently.  Other factors, like a fatty meal, can also affect the duration of Cialis’s effects.

As a general rule, Cialis will start acting upon your body about 15 minutes after taking  a dosage.  However, the peak levels of Cialis won’t enter your body until several hours after taking the medicine.  So, while you may get great results from Cialis after only 15 minutes, you could get even better results 1-4 hours after taking Cialis.

Cialis has a half-life of about 17 hours.  A half-life is how long it takes for your body to eliminate 50% of a drug.  So, after 17 hours, only half of your Cialis dosage will be working.  After 34 hours, only one-quarter of the dosage will be working.  Compared to Viagra and Levitra which have half-lives of 4-5 hours, Cialis lasts incredibly long.  Most men are able to report benefits from Cialis up to 36 hours.  Some men are even able to experience positive results after 100 hours of taking a single dosage of Cialis.

Many drugs, including Cialis, get broken down by the kidneys and liver.  As we age, our kidney and liver function tend to decline.  That means Cialis will typically last longer in older patients.  If you are over 65 and taking Cialis, you can expect to get at least 36 hours of benefits from the medicine whereas patients around the age of 40 may be lucky to get up to 36 hours.

Certain medicines can also affect kidney or liver function, thus affecting how long Cialis lasts.  If you are taking any drug which slows the kidneys of liver, you can expect Cialis to last even longer in you.  Also, if you are taking any medications which dilate blood vessels, then Cialis can also work for longer periods of time.

It is important that you understand the difference between “duration of effectiveness” and “duration of effects.”  Just because Cialis can be effective for 36 hours, that does NOT mean you will have an erection for 36 hours.  It simply means that, during this time, any erection you receive will be of a higher quality.  The erections you receive while taking Cialis should not last unusually long periods of time.  You will, however, notice that the time between erections is reduced.

It is not normal for Cialis to give you erections which last 4+ hours or are painful.  This is a sign of a serious condition called priapism.  Even though this may seem desirable, priapism is actually a very serious condition which should immediately be treated with emergency medical help.  While it can be embarrassing to go to the emergency room because of a long-lasting erection, you must do this.  Priapism can lead to permanent penis damage which may require surgery to fix.
